ROOTED

Health & Wellness

“and I said to my body, softly ‘I want to be your friend’.’ It took a long breath and replied, ‘I have been waiting my whole life for this’.” - Nayyirah Waheed

“Maybe you are searching among branches for

what only appears in the roots”  - Rumi

Our bodies are wise.  Each ache, pain, fever, or sniffle, is a whisper from our bodies indicating something isn’t functioning optimally.  One approach teaches us to treat these symptoms, by suppressing them or turning them off.  Headaches require a pain reliever, tummy aches- an acid reducer, etc.  But, imagine if every time your oil light went on in your car- that you drove to the mechanic, and he simply turned off the light.  The oil would never get changed, and over time, the result would be catastrophic.

“The answers we’re looking for are all within ourselves, we just need to become better connected, more present…to what we eat, to nature, to our surroundings and to our inner guide.” ~ Mariel Hemingway

If our bodies work in a similar manner, what happens when we simply look at our symptoms without regard for what lies beneath?   In Functional nutrition, we consider the whole person- as an individual, with a unique mold and instead of shutting down important signals from our bodies, we work to listen deeper and understand the message.  Although what we see are the branches of our trees, we must realize that they are a direct result of what happens underground at the root, where nourishment

and growth take place.

What you eat matters. It drives how your body functions and feels.  It is the force and fuel that delivers nutrients that are behind every signal between cells that turn genes on or off, affect hormones, the immune system and emotions to name a few. Our bodies do not exist in compartments.  To prioritize wellness, a synergy must exist between lifestyle, diet, stress management, relationships, environment, sleep and genetics.

"The part can never be well unless the whole is well." ~ Plato

Any gardener will tell you that the key to plentiful growth and bearing fruit starts with the soil in which you plant. The soil can support the roots of your tree providing nourishment and growth, or can lack crucial nutrients and allow weeds to take hold and choke out life. The conventional model of medicine suggests that every weed that grows must be sought out and destroyed, waiting for the next one to grow. But Nutritional medicine focuses not only on pulling the weeds at the root, but focusing on making the soil in which

they grow uninhabitable.

Instead of killing the weed, time and time again, let’s make the soil

a place in which weeds cannot grow.

Getting Rooted in Health & Wellness means supporting life from the ground up.  It means looking deeper, taking a little more time, finding out what lies behind dysfunction and fixing it at the root, so that in time, with love and nourishment, we can bear amazing fruit.

"The table is a meeting place, a gathering ground, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction. A person cooking is a person giving: Even the simplest food is a gift."
